Trick of the Light- Matt Corby

Trick of The Light- Matt Corby. 20x20x1.5 gallery canvas. Okay...this is one is huge...for me anyway. This is the last one of this subject...I can say I have studied/slayed the water reflections! haha. Again, this one was painted on a canvas I had repurposed with black gesso. It did not, however, lend to very much blending like gessobord...which could be a good thing for me! It reminds me of those old velvet paintings..

Backwater- Meat Puppets

Backwater- Meat Puppets. 8x8 Oil on gessobord. Here is another one for the DPW water challenge. I painted this one on a black gessobord. I sometimes re-gesso crappy paintings after I give them a light sanding. I love how this one turned out.
For those of you following my blog....I have a new website...which also includes a blog. I may eventually abandon this blog and just go with the new one. But before I do that, I will let y'all know! Thanks Tess
Click here for my new website! I have lots of work to do on it yet...but its coming along!

Drift Away- The Rolling Stones

Drift Away- The Rolling Stones. 6x6 Oil on Gessobord
Done for the challenge this week on DPW....water. The inspiration for this painting comes from the Oklahoma River Walk. We had plenty of time to watch the ducks drift by while eating our dinner on the water. It was a beautiful evening. I have been wanting to paint this one for a couple months and finally got around to it. Thanks for the challenge Carol! The water didn't turn out the first time...so I wiped it off and started again. The first version was dark and I didn't like the actual color....so I spiced it up! Of course!

Can't Touch This(tle) 1 thru 4- MC Hammer

Can't Touch This(tle)- MC Hammer. Four separate 5x7 canvas panels. The challenge this week on DPW is to paint an object four times. The first one with as much detail as you want and then each panel should get less detail and be rougher until the last one is barely recognizable. I couldn't find anything to paint that inspired me in my hotel room..until I went on a walk and found this wonderful purple thistle! Which is very prickly! But, close up they are so delicate!Well....the first one (upper left) took me about 30 minutes...the last one (lower right) took about 5 minutes. I think I like the last one the best!

Potthast

Potthast Study- 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Every year I buy an engagement calendar to keep me organized. This year it is from the National Gallery of Art. I find inspiration in the pages of paintings every day. I have been saving the ones that I really like and this is one of them. I like to write the artists name on the bottom and then later investigate more of what they have painted and who they were. Not all of the artists are familiar to me. This is a small piece of a work by Edward Henry Potthast. I love the brush stokes and spontaneity of the scene.
Edward Henry Potthast was an American Impressionist painter. He is known for his paintings of people at leisure in Central Park, and on the beaches of New York and New England. Wikipedia

Shadow Play Update

Update on this one! After looking at other paintings of this same subject, I decided mine was too fussy. So I threw it on the easel this morning and obliterated part of it! Haha...I think it makes it better. I also lightened it up a little.

Shadow Play- Rory Gallagher

Shadow Play- Rory Gallager. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. The challenge this week is creating a good composition using Carol's photo. I decided to crop it to make the window with the plant the focus. Deciding where to crop was not easy on this one. I used linseed oil thinned with odorless thinner to blur the outside edges of the shadows.

Morning Has Broken- Cat Stevens

Morning Has Broken- Cat Stevens. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Here is another one for the barn challenge. We took this photo near the Stillwater River in Montana nearly 30 years ago! (OMG did I just say.... 30 years ago?) haha. We took our two little kids on a hike and found this old barn/cabin. I have been saving the photo to paint that long. Yikes. I recently purchased Color Theory by Patti Mollica and this crazy color scheme is the result! Yes...giving her a little plug here! It is a great book. The actual photo wasn't taken at sunrise...but the color scheme warranted this title!

Big Red Barn- Mean Mary

Big Red Barn- Mean Mary. 8x8 Oil on gessobord. The challenge this week on Daily Paintworks is barns! I took this photo many years ago of this barn on the road between Columbus and Park City, Montana. It was just starting to warm up and the snow was still on the ground...Signs of spring! I had never listened to Mean Mary...very good banjo player!

Tombstone Shadow- Creedence Clearwater Revival

Tombstone Shadow- Creedence Clearwater Revival. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. I painted this for the challenge this week on Daily Paintworks. The challenge is to pick an object and then light it with two or more colored light sources. My husband and I visited a museum in Abilene, Texas a couple of weeks ago and I took some photos of this huge pile of faux bison skulls...I thought the colors and shadows were intriguing. What a coincidence that just a few weeks I had a photo reference to paint for the challenge.

Sweet Disposition- The Temper Trap

Sweet Disposition- The Temper Trap. 8x8 Oil on gessobord. Painted for the challenge this week. I decided to paint another one of my daughter's puppy she lost a few weeks ago. The first one I painted just turned out all white...since he was a little white dog...and it is okay..but I wanted one with more color, so this was a great exercise for me to experiment.

Emotional Rescue- Rolling Stones

Emotional Rescue- Rolling Stones. 6x6 on cradled 2" board. I took this photo a few years ago when my husband and I went down to the river in North Dakota to fish. It was such a nice warm day and the river was just lazily flowing along....taking all my worries with it! I can almost smell the water and the wet sand.

Bus Stop- The Hollies

Bus Stop- The Hollies. 8x8 oil on gessobord. No rain in this view! This month I am participating in the Google Virtual Paintout for Tunisia! Here is a nice little bus stop on the island of Djerba Ajim in Tunisia. The gist of it is to go to google street view and find something interesting to paint. I loved the shadows on the bench and the round roofs. I changed up my paint a little for this one...ditching the Cad Yellow Light for Indian Yellow. I think my greens are improved.

Bluebonnets- Aaron Watson

Bluebonnets- Aaron Watson. 8x8 Oil on gessobord.
Painted for the challenge this week to use a variety of brushes. I used about 6. A couple of flats, a round, a liner and even my palette knife. Good exercise. This is not even close to what I had envisioned when I started. I was thinking more of a mass of blue...a more abstract looking one. I like this one, but will probably try the abstract one next!
I found this song and it goes so perfectly I had to use it. Bluebonnets do fade fast...you have to be on the ball to drive the back roads to see them!...and they ARE en masse!

All Summer Long- Kid Rock

All Summer Long- Kid Rock. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Painted for the challenge this week. Why did I choose that plate? It was so complicated! I like the look of the dishtowel with the watermelon. I am a dishtowel junkie! I buy all kinds of them, and this one just went so well with watermelon.

Texas National- Stephen F. Austin State University

This is HAPPENING! This is framed and ready to go to Nacogdoches, Texas to the Stephen F. Austin State University for the Texas National Competition and Exhibition 2017. The email I received announcing that my entry had been accepted said, "This year's exhibition had well over 800 entries, and our juror, Benito Huerta, selected 92 artworks for the exhibition."
And one of those was MINE!!!!
I feel so fortunate to be included!
This is a dream come true for me.

Happiness- Needtobreathe

Happiness- Needtobreathe. 8x8 Oil on gessobord.
Since we are so close to Easter I decided on a bunny today! Super cute little guy...sheer happiness! I tried a new technique by painting on black gesso. Ugh...not so easy. Totally have to change up the progress of the lights and darks. It turned out a little different than my usual ones. Might try this again!

Hot Stuff- Donna Summer

Hot Stuff- Donna Summer. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Painted for the challenge this week. Glass- and the effects of behind or overlapping. I like the way this turned out. I was a bit over zealous by picking that tablecloth but managed to make it believable.

Cat Size- Suzi Quatro

Cat Size- Suzi Quatro. 8x8 Oil on gessobord. Gotta love a cat! Hidden in the garden...has found a super spot to nap! Cool dappled shade!

In Color- Jamey Johnson

In Color- Jamey Johnson. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. The challenge this week on Daily Paintworks is to use a black and white photo and change it to color. Use some wild colors that would not really be the actual color. I looked at the original and thought...okay..green and red apples...I will use yellow, and for the oranges...I will use green. Well... when I finished... I looked at it and instantly saw yellow apples...yes mother nature makes those... and limes. So I completely changed the colors and still ended up with something believable!

Ain't No Mountain High Enough- Diana Ross.....Second attempt

Ain't No Mountain High Enough...second attempt at the challenge. I decided there was absolutely nothing I liked about the first one I painted. The colors were dull...the composition was just so...so I wiped it off and started again. I used a editing program to bump up the color to ridiculous...to make me think about the colors differently. I like this one much better.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough- Diana Ross

Ain't No Mountain High Enough- Diana Ross
6x6 Oil on gessobord. Painted for the challenge this week on Daily Paintworks. We were given a photo of mountains and challenged to make a good 6x6 composition. I decided to make one shorter than the other. But wondering if the tall one is high enough. Hahaha. As usual I didn't stop when I should have. Ended up obliterating some of the little rocks in the front that were a distraction.

Big and Chunky- Wiil I Am

Repainted the background! Like this blue much better!

Big and Chunky- Wiil I Am. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Painted for the challenge this week. The challenge is to break down the subject into color blocks.....and try to leave it chunky. Truly is hard to do! Good exercise!
This song is from a movie...Madagascar! Super fun! I had a zumba teacher that used this song! I think I laughed as much as I exercised! Haha

Bird On A Wire- Willie Nelson

Bird On A Wire- Willie Nelson. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Photo by J. Lucas Photography. I had originally intended to do this in a mosaic or fractured style..but once again I couldn't keep loose enough to pull that off. I may try it again just to see if I can do it!

Black and White- Three Dog Night

Black and White- Three Dog Night. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. The challenge this week on Daily Paintworks is to find some black and white objects to paint. I scrounged around the house for awhile and finally settled on some of my tools. The brush is almost an ivory...but I thought...close enough!
I lit the still life with a regular incandescent bulb to get the gold reflections. The dark paint always wants to shine on the brush strokes. As u can tell...I am not so neat rolling up my paint tubes:).

Isla Bella- Ricky Martin

Isla Bella- Ricky Martin. 8x8 Oil on gessobord. For the last day of the 30 in 30 paintings challenge I participated in the Google Virtual Paintout. This months location is Puerto Rico. The gist of it is to go to google maps and find a street location that you like and want to paint. Super fun to explore. I have been to Puerto Rico...a couple of years ago...almost our whole Parker family went on a cruise. One of the stops was San Juan. What fun we had...and one of the stops, before we got back on the ship was of course Senor Frog's for some tasty margaritas.

Eye In The Sky- Alan Parsons Project

Eye In The Sky- Alan Parsons Project
12x12 On Canvas Panel
The challenge this week is to do an abstract based on a square tile. Divide the canvas and then randomly copy your tile into the spaces. This was fun...but was difficult for me to keep going. In the end the colors are pleasing, but probably won't try again! Haha

Bits And Pieces- The Dave Clark Five

Bits And Pieces- The Dave Clark Five. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Second attempt at the challenge. I am loving the mosaic feel of this.

Shine- Collective Soul

Shine- Collective Soul. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. The challenge this week on Daily Paintworks is aluminum foil. After trying to think what I could set up with foil????I finally came up with this. First attempt I had crinkled the foil too much and the color was so broken up, I figured it might take me a month to paint it!....but second try I controlled my crinkling. It still is pretty broken up. I experimented with the camera also taking the shot to work off my ipad. This one the foil is really clear...I also have one which the daisy is in focus. I'll try that one today.

The Fightin' Side of Me- Merle Haggard

The Fightin' Side of Me- Merle Haggard
8x10 Oil on Canvas
This is the second to last one of the metallic primed canvas I painted. He truly looks like an evil rooster and looking for a fight! My husband Tim always tells me about his grandpas chickens and how the rooster got to be very mean. I don't think I would like to tangle with him! Special thanks to Cindy Nowotny for the photo!

Struttin'- Jerry Reed

Struttin'- Jerry Reed. 8x10 on Canvas. Here is another one on the metallic gold background. Shiny surface so takes along time to dry...but I think I am getting the hang of it! Day 10 of the 30 paintings in 30 days! Reference photo by Cindy Nowotny

Gold- John Stewart

Gold- John Stewart. 8x10 Oil on Canvas
The challenge this week is a lovely goldfish. I tried a new technique with this one. Painted the canvas a fabulous gold acrylic...(I hate painting on canvas!ugh...too much bounce...and it seems the canvas gesso just sucks up the color..but have to use them up.) The goal is to paint and still leave some of the metallic showing thru. I think I might have actually been successful!

La Vie En Rose- Daniela Andrade

La Vie En Rose- Daniela Andrade. 8x10 Canvas. I tried a new technique today. I painted my canvas a metallic silver, then drew my design with a heavy black marker...big mistake...the marker kept bleeding through the paint...so tomorrow I will draw with oil paint or my usual charcoal. I think it turned out pretty good.
If you have never clicked on the music for one of my paintings....this is the one to do it on. This is most magical song and soooooooooo beautiful.

Old Boots, New Dirt- Jason Aldean

Old Boots, New Dirt- Jason Aldean. 6x6 Oil on gessobord. Day 2 of the 30 in 30. Two in one day! wow...I am on a roll. This song just says it all!

Complimentary

The challenge this week on Daily Paintworks is complementary colors. Choose two complementary colors and use more of one or the other. This is also Day 1 of the 30 in 30 paintings for January. Oops...a little late.
